HISTORY STUDENT TIMES

The History Student Times is a student led publication at the University of Leeds affiliated to the School of History. For the academic year 2019/20 I held the position of editorial intern, heading the publishing of 58 articles in three editions, covering themes of technology, the body and gender, sexuality & identity.

ISSUE ONE
TECHNOLOGY: IN HISTORICAL REVIEW

This summer marked 50 years since the first moon landing; a 'giant leap for mankind' which marked a penetration in the expected limits of technology. In celebration of this event, 2019/20‟s first issue is dedicated to looking at technology in historical review.
Our writers explore the contributions of individuals and societies to key technological developments and consider themes of industrialisation, militarisation, the rise of media and the role of women.

ISSUE TWO
BODIES: IN HISTORICAL REVIEW

Human bodies form the essence of our existence and therefore, are central to all histories. They are the vessels of life that we all inhabit, as well as the way in which we inhabit space. Bodies can serve as a source of identity: our physical features are used by others to recognise us and we express our individual tastes through clothing them. They are the embodiment of all human existence.

It is for these reasons that this issue of the History Student Times is dedicated to looking at history through the lens of bodies. This discipline gained momentum upon the publication of Michel Foucault’s Discipline and Punish: The Birth of the Prison in 1975 and saw a number of historians take a more detailed look into the ways bodies can be controlled and express agency.

ISSUE THREE
GENDER, SEXUALITY AND IDENTITY: IN HISTORICAL REVIEW

As we approach June, LGBTQ+ Pride Month, it seemed a fitting time to explore ideas of gender, sexuality and identity and how they have navigated their way through history. Spanning from the exploration of gender roles in indigenous societies, to the effects of ingrained masculinity, to the importance of LGBTQ+ spaces in the reunification of countries divided by dichotomous regimes, this final issue of the 2019/2020 academic year wonderfully highlights the rich areas of research these disciplines offer.
